Medical Retina

Jerry W. Tsong, M.D.

What is the Retina?

The retina is the light-sensitive tissue which covers the inner surface of the back of the eye. The retina converts light, or an image, into electrical impulses. The retina then sends these impulses, or nerve signals, to the brain. The center part of the retina is called the macula. The macula is used for a person's central vision, such as looking at people's faces or sports scores on the television.

What is Medical Retina?

The diagnosis and treatment of retinal problems in the office setting is called Medical Retina. This includes treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, hypertensive retinopathy, vitreous floaters, retinal tears, and some types of retinal detachments.
