Cataracts

What are Cataracts?

A cataract is the progressive clouding of the normally clear lens inside the eye. The vision through a cataract is similar to a window that is frosted or coated with steam. Common symptoms of cataracts are:

  • Glare, or sensitivity to light
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Brighter light needed to read
  • Progressively poor night vision
  • Colors not as crisp and clear
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription
  • Normal aging of the eye
  • Family history
  • Diabetes or other medical problems
  • Injury to the eye
  • Steroid use or other medications

Particularly in the elderly, cataracts are a common cause of poor vision. Cataracts can be detected during a thorough eye examination by an ophthalmologist. During this exam the presence and extent of the cataract can be determined.

The only way at the present time to remove a cataract is by surgery. Lasers are not used to remove cataracts. The surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis at a hospital or an accredited surgery center. Obviously, through discussion with your doctor the best course of treatment for your individual needs and symptoms would be determined.
